Jumping into Summer! Principal's Message

Dear Franklin Sherman Families,

I hope this message finds you enjoying a restful and rejuvenating summer. It’s hard to believe that in just a few short weeks, we’ll be welcoming everyone back for another exciting school year. I am thrilled to reconnect with our students, families, and staff as we embark on a new journey of learning and growth. Our exciting theme for this year that was voted on by staff is Destination Learning: Go, Grow, Know, & Show. In the upcoming weeks, I will send some pictures of the exciting new items at Franklin Sherman that the PTA has purchased for us this year. I am so grateful to have such a partnership with the community and PTA. Your support truly makes a difference!

As we prepare for the upcoming school year, I want to share some important dates and events to help you get ready for a smooth transition back to school. In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, please do feel free to reach out to me. I know we are welcoming some new families to us this August and I am excited for our Panda family to grow!

FCPS Family Vision Group

If you are interested in being a parent representative for the family vision group please email Farris Thomas ([email protected]).

This program is designed to foster a collaborative environment where diverse families can engage directly with Dr. Reid on important issues that impact student success. The FCPS Family Vision Group brings communities together to discuss and achieve the goals of the 2023-2030 Strategic Plan, which prioritizes excellence, equity, and opportunity for all students.

By participating, parents/caregivers gain valuable knowledge and connections to become powerful partners in their child's educational journey.  The group also facilitates open discussions with Dr. Reid on important topics related to student success.  Bi-monthly meetings (August 2024 - May 2025) ensure consistent school representation and foster open communication through Q&A sessions, and feedback opportunities to help participants inform other families at their schools. The FCPS Family Vision Group seeks to recognize and strengthen the positive impact of community engagement on student achievement. Key responsibilities of the FCPS Family Connection Group Include:

  • Regularly attend FCPS Family Vision Group meetings.
  • Support the superintendent's outreach efforts to engage families and community members.
  • Actively participate in the exchange of information and perspectives.
  • Serve as ambassadors to your school community by being an additional bridge to sharing information between families and the superintendent.

Mathematics Independent Learning Options for Families

Summer enrichment opportunities can provide students access to review and support meaningful learning experiences aligned to course objectives. Required summer assignments are not allowed as they can pose barriers for students who are unable to complete them and create the perception that the rigor of a course is only accessible for those with conditions that support structured learning over the summer.

The purpose of optional summer enrichment might be to:

  • Activate students’ background knowledge and skills;
  • Provide opportunity to review introductory topics/prerequisites for the course; or
  • Create or enhance enthusiasm and interest in a subject or to serve as a springboard for future learning.

Summer enrichment activities should not be given to learn new material or fill large gaps as a result of the pandemic. Whenever possible, it is recommended to provide students with voice and choice in their learning. Linked below are options that can be shared with students and families.

Jumping into Summer! Jumping into Summer!

Principal's Message

Dear Franklin Sherman Families,

As we say farewell for the summer, we are thrilled to have hired new staff members that come with wonderful experience from other FCPS schools or other schools.  We are proud to have a full staff for the 2024-25 school year!

The end of the year also brings a time to say goodbye to those moving away and off to new adventures. Sophie Hoffman- career switch; Sandra Donahoe- moving states; Gail Chambers-  transitioning to another FCPS school; Katie Robinson- career switch; Olvia Horne- transitioning to another FCPS school for a leadership position; Bushra Foukhouri- leaving the profession; Elmo Hempstead- transitioning to another FCPS school; Jamie Leitch- transitioning to another FCPS school for a leadership position.

We wish them the best of luck and thank them for their years as Pandas.

As this is the last Flash for the year, I just want to thank this community for their warm welcome to me as I became the Franklin Sherman principal. I hope everyone has a fantastic, restful summer.

Principal's Message

Dear Franklin Sherman Families,

As we enter the final 8 days of the school year, our hearts are full of gratitude and pride for the incredible journey we've shared. The past few months have been filled with learning, growth, and wonderful memories, and we have a few more exciting events to look forward to before we bid farewell for the summer. I am so thankful to be a part of this Franklin Sherman family.

Celebrations and Highlights

Last week, our students showed exceptional enthusiasm and participation in various school activities. We had the band, strings, and chorus spring concert at McLean HS. It was such a magical night filled with so much talent. We have also had grade level parties last week and some that continue into this week. We had a fantastic field day. Thank you Coach Nielsen!!! Thank you also to the parents who volunteered to help. We had exceptional weather and everyone had a great time. It was also so wonderful to be a part of the Franklin Sherman family picnic tradition. Seeing all of the families gather to celebrate with their children was truly remarkable. This building is really such a gem and special place!

Upcoming Events

Here are the key events coming up in our school calendar:

  • Friday Fun Day with Kona Ice: On Friday, June 7th, from 3:50 to 4:40 pm, treat your family to some refreshing Kona Ice as we celebrate the end of another fantastic week. It's a perfect way to unwind and enjoy some sweet treats together.
  • Last Day of School: Wednesday, June 12th, will be our last day of school, with a 2-hour early release. This day is always bittersweet as we say goodbye for the summer, but we are excited for the adventures and relaxation that await our students.

Thank you for all that you do to make this building such a wonderful place.

Contents Information for Students Interested in Choir and the School Musical Next School Year

There’s some exciting news regarding the choir program and annual musical at Franklin Sherman Elementary School.

In an effort to make our music programming sustainable and an integrated part of the school day for 5th and 6th graders, there will be some anticipated changes. The most significant change is that the musical will now be incorporated into the choir curriculum for 5th and 6th graders, unlike previous years when the musical was exclusively for 6th graders. This also means 6th graders are not required to participate in the musical unless they join choir.

Choir will continue to prepare and perform the Veteran’s Day Patriotic Sing-Along, Holiday Sing-Along, McLean Pyramid Concert, and Spring Concert in addition to performing the musical.  We believe that these changes will enhance the experience for our students and create a more cohesive arts program at Franklin Sherman.

End of Year Book Swap

As the end of the school year is approaching and you start cleaning up, put aside any gently used books that you do not need anymore. If they still have a lot of life in them, they will make their next owner happy! So don’t keep them around! Bring them to our End of the Year Book Swap!

On Monday and Tuesday June 3rd and 4th, bring any books you wish to swap in the library. There, from the book swap table, you will exchange them with the same number of books that you brought. If you do not have any books to swap at the moment, don’t let that stop you. Come by the library and get a book! We have a lot of books for your summer reading!!

It is fun! You can replenish your bookshelf without spending money!

Come one, come many! And bring your used and unused books for swapping!

For more information, contact our librarian Rosalie Essimi, [email protected]

Principal's Message

Dear Franklin Sherman Elementary School Community,

I am thrilled to share some wonderful highlights from our school community from the previous week:

Celebrations and Highlights:

Last week was a bustling one at Franklin Sherman Elementary! Our students showed their knowledge and skills during the Reading SOL, and we couldn't be prouder of their hard work. Alongside academics, we also gathered for a special assembly that brought joy and excitement to all our students. Thank you to the PTA for sponsoring Jim Basketball Jones. The kids LOVED it!

A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated staff members who put in extra effort to ensure our students felt supported and prepared for their assessments. We're immensely grateful for their commitment to our students' success.

Additionally, a big shoutout to our incredible PTA for their generosity in providing delicious food and treats for our staff appreciation event. Your kindness truly made a difference!

Upcoming Events:

This week, we have more opportunities for academic achievement with the Science and Math SOL exams. We encourage all students to approach these assessments with confidence and determination.

Looking ahead, mark your calendars for our upcoming PTA meeting scheduled for the 16th. It's a fantastic opportunity to stay informed, connect with other parents, and contribute to the enriching experiences we provide for our students.

Closing Thoughts:

As we navigate through these busy weeks, let's continue to support and uplift one another. Together, we create a nurturing environment where every child can thrive. Thank you for your ongoing partnership and commitment to Franklin Sherman Elementary.

Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead filled with learning, laughter, and memorable moments.

Principal's Message

Dear Franklin Sherman Elementary School Community,

I hope this message finds you well and filled with the same excitement and gratitude that I have as we celebrate Staff Appreciation Week here at Franklin Sherman.  This week is dedicated to honoring the incredible dedication, hard work, and passion that our teachers and staff bring to our school community each and every day.

Our teachers play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our children. They not only educate but inspire, guide, and nurture our students to reach their full potential. It is through their unwavering commitment and tireless efforts that our school continues to thrive.

I encourage each and every one of you to take a moment this week to celebrate and appreciate your child's teacher. A simple note of thanks or a small treat can go a long way in showing them how much they are valued and appreciated.

Additionally, I am thrilled to share that our Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) is going above and beyond to spoil our staff this week. They have organized a stocked lounge this week and a potluck breakfast on Friday to show our teachers and staff just how much they mean to us. I encourage you to reach out to the PTA and sign up to help make this event a success. Your contributions, no matter how big or small, will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your continued support and dedication to our school.

Class Placements for 24-25:

Each spring, we begin the essential task of determining class placements for the next school year.  The school staff works collaboratively to create classroom assignments.  It is the task of the grade level teachers, specialists, and administration to determine distribution of students to optimally create classroom groupings.

As parents, you can assist us in determining class placement by sharing your insights about your child with respect to academic and behavioral information using this form. Please note that we do not accept requests for specific teachers for the upcoming grade placement.  This includes hints that reference specific teachers. We cannot guarantee multiple friend requests nor exceptions for other students with whom there may be a conflict.

Required Immunizations for Rising 7th and 12th Graders

Immunizations are required for all students entering 7th and 12th grades this fall. Visit the FCPS immunization webpage to learn about the required vaccines.  Caregivers should ask their private healthcare provider or the health department to review their student's immunization record to ensure that their student has received these required immunizations.

It is important to schedule immunizations early in the summer, as seventh-grade students must submit documentation of the Tdap and Meningococcal vaccines before they begin school in August. Twelfth-grade students must submit documentation of the Meningococcal vaccine.

Principal's Message

Dear Franklin Sherman Elementary School Community,

Spring is in full bloom, and so is the energy at Franklin Sherman! This past week was a whirlwind of learning, fun, and appreciation. We celebrated Earth Day by participating in exciting classroom activities about our planet. We also had a jam packed week with Earth Day spirit week. It was great to see so many unified color days and a fun animal print to end our week. The 5th grade also got to enjoy their field trip to the National History Museum.

Celebrating Kindness:

Congratulations to our April Panda Kindness winners! These students consistently demonstrate empathy and compassion towards their peers, making Franklin Sherman a more welcoming place for everyone. It is also wonderful to watch students cheer on their peers!

Staff Appreciation:

Did you know that last week's staff meeting had a delicious twist? We enjoyed a catered breakfast from Campus Survival Kits, the same company many of you utilize when purchasing school supplies. Based on the number of parents that purchased through Campus Survival Kits, the school earns points and we cashed in our rewards for a delicious breakfast last week.

Upcoming Events:

Teacher Work Day: Just a friendly reminder that next Friday, May 3rd, is a designated teacher work day. Students will enjoy a well-deserved break while our educators participate in professional development opportunities.

Mark Your Calendars!

Get ready to shower our amazing teachers with love and appreciation! The week of May 6th marks our annual Staff Appreciation Week. Please check the PTA email to find ways you can help in showing your appreciation and gratitude for the staff here.

Principal's Message

Dear Franklin Sherman Elementary School Community,

School Events Recap:

  • We kicked off last week with a delightful Staff Bake-Off, where our talented staff members showcased their baking skills. Congratulations to the winners: Ms. Mastakas, Ms. Shelley, and Ms. Eaton! Your delicious treats brought smiles to everyone's faces.
  • Another highlight of the week was the fulfillment of the grant applied for by Mr. Ralston through Dominion Electric. The Dominion team worked tirelessly to refurbish our outdoor classroom, including the wooden benches and podium. We are grateful for their support in creating a vibrant learning environment for our students.

Celebrations and Highlights:

  • We had several staff members attend a FCPS Portrait of a Graduate Presentation of Learning exhibition this week so we can continue to grow this work at FS next year.

Upcoming Events:

  • Mark your calendars for the School Assembly on May 9th! We are thrilled to welcome Jim Basketball Jones, who will present to all grades on ways to stay motivated and maintain a positive outlook on life. It promises to be an inspiring and uplifting experience for our students.
  • Get ready for Earth Week celebrations this week with a Spirit Week!
  • Each spring, we begin the essential task of determining class placements for the next school year.

Principal's Message

Dear Franklin Sherman Elementary School Community,

We finally had a week of fantastic weather and just in time for the eclipse! I hope everyone has been able to spend some quality time soaking in the sunshine to help us refresh for the spring and final quarter this year. Since joining in the winter months, it has been such a joy to walk the property and see the students smiling during recess and also having staff take advantage of the many areas to let students enjoy the great weather and read outside.

School Events Recap:

  • We had an awe-inspiring experience as our students witnessed a solar eclipse this week. It was a fantastic opportunity for all students to go outside and marvel at the wonders of the universe. It was great to see so many parents come to help participate in this event as well. I loved seeing the creative way the Kindergarten teachers had the students create solar shields with paper plates. The students were so engaged and excited to watch such a unique opportunity.
  • Wednesday was a special day for many families as they celebrated Eid, spending quality time with loved ones and cherishing cherished traditions. We extend warm wishes to all families who observed this meaningful occasion.
  • Thank you to the PTA for another week of successful events to include Bingo Night and the garden clean up on Saturday. As we interview candidates for next year, we always love to share how involved our PTA and parent community is and the wonderful partnership we have created to ensure student success and support to our staff.

Upcoming Events:

  • Mark your calendars for the SOL assessment dates:
    • May 7: Reading SOL for Grades 3-5
    • May 9: Student Assembly
    • May 14: Science SOL for Grade 5
    • May 16: Math SOL for Grades 3-6
  • Stay tuned for more details about our end-of-year activities, including Field Day, classroom parties, and the exciting assembly for all students.

Important Reminders:

  • As we approach the end of the school year, please ensure that students are well-rested, prepared, and ready to excel in their assessments and end-of-year activities.
  • Continue to stay updated on important announcements, dates, and school events.

I hope this message finds you well and ready for another exciting week ahead. Let's reflect on the past week's events, celebrate achievements, and look forward to upcoming happenings at Franklin Sherman Elementary.

School Events Recap:

  • Last week, our first-grade students embarked on a thrilling Safari Day, showcasing their twenty-first-century skills with enthusiasm and creativity. It was heartwarming for our young learners to engage in hands-on learning experiences and demonstrate their talents. It was also fantastic to have such a large turnout from the parents for this special event.
  • The Kindergarten orientation was a tremendous success, with our future pandas eagerly exploring their new learning environment and getting acquainted with our school community. I am thrilled to welcome them aboard!

Celebrations and Highlights:

  • Let's celebrate the dedication and effort of our students, teachers, and staff who made the Safari Day and Kindergarten orientation memorable and enriching experiences for everyone involved.
  • A special shoutout to our supportive families for encouraging and empowering our students to embrace learning opportunities and showcase their skills.

Upcoming Events:

  • Today, we are excited to witness a solar eclipse, providing a unique learning opportunity for our students. Grade level teachers have prepared engaging activities related to this celestial event and have notified you in their newsletters.  If you plan to opt your child out of participating, please email their teacher and myself  promptly.
  • Please note that there will be no school on Wednesday in observance of Eid-al-Fitr. We extend warm wishes to all families celebrating this joyous occasion.
  • Get ready for a night of fun and excitement at our PTA Bingo Night on Friday! Join us for a chance to bond with fellow families, and support our school community.

Important Reminders:

  • As we approach the end of the school year, please stay updated on important dates, activities, and announcements through our school newsletter.

Contents Solar Eclipse Safety Information

A solar eclipse is a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon, and one that requires important safety reminders.

Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes. At Franklin Sherman, the PTA has partnered with us to be able to purchase approved eyewear so that students can safely view the eclipse ONLY while wearing the eyewear. All students whose families opted out of going outside to view the eclipse will be engaged with alternative activities.

Here are some important reminders:

  • Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce it at home.
