Staffing Update

Franklin Sherman Weekly Newsletter2 days ago

Dear Franklin Sherman Families,

As we approach the final months of the school year, I want to share some important staffing updates with you. Our region has requested that Mr. Ralston, our dedicated Assistant Principal, lend his expertise and support to another school within the district. While we will certainly miss Mr. Ralston’s presence and valuable contributions to our school community, we understand the importance of regional collaboration and are proud that he has been selected for this assignment. We extend our warmest wishes to Mr. Ralston as he embarks on this temporary role and thank him for his unwavering commitment to Franklin Sherman.

In Mr. Ralston's absence, I am delighted to announce that Ms. Stoermann, our current Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART), has graciously agreed to step into the role of Interim Assistant Principal. Ms. Stoermann joined the Franklin Sherman family in 2022 and has quickly become an integral part of our educational team. Her passion for student success and her collaborative spirit have been evident in her work with our teachers and students.

Ms. Stoermann brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this new position. She holds a Master of Education in Leadership from George Mason University, which equips her with the skills and insights necessary to support our school community effectively. We are confident that her leadership will ensure a smooth transition and maintain the high standards of excellence we strive for at Franklin Sherman.

We are excited to welcome Ms. Stoermann into this new leadership role and know that she will continue to be a strong advocate for our students. Please join me in extending a warm welcome and offering your support as she takes on these new responsibilities.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding these staffing changes, please do not hesitate to reach out to me via email [email protected]. We are committed to keeping you informed and ensuring a positive and seamless experience for all our students.

We are looking forward to a wonderful and successful conclusion to the school year. Thank you for your continued partnership and support.

The Green Scene

Hello FSES Parents!

We have an awesome turn out on Friday afternoons for helping in our pollinator garden!  Our Green Scene club has been planning what we would like to start planting in the spring which is coming up very soon. Our club meets on Tuesday mornings at 8:15 and anyone is welcome to join us. You just need a permission slip that either Ms. Eaton, Mrs. Essimi, or Ms. Michalski can give you. Just ask.

We have received a lot of vegetable and flower seeds which we looked at and read about at our last Tuesday meeting. Vegetable beds will be installed hopefully this Friday, if weather cooperates, and with parent volunteers. Come join us after school for that, or every Friday until school gets out (minus Spring Break). We hope to get the car tires that were placed in there painted bright colors very soon. If you like to paint and want to help, place wear clothes you don't mind getting paint on. The tires will be used as planters which we plan to grow sweet potatoes in!

Thank you for your interest! Our garden is shaping up.

Ms. Eaton

Chesterbrook Preschool Peer Model

Chesterbrook Preschool Peer Model Enrollment Interest

We are in the process of registering students to be peer models in Early Childhood Class Based Preschool for next school year. Our program will invite a limited number of community preschoolers, who are age 4-5 years (must be at least 4 years old by September, 30 of school year), to participate in our daily preschool activities. The children from the community will have the opportunity to make new friends and share experiences with current early childhood special education students. Our students will, in turn, benefit from being with community peers who can model appropriate language, motor, and social skills.

The goal of this program is to encourage active learning and promote social interaction and acceptance through shared experiences between the community children and our preschoolers with special needs. Parents will need to provide transportation for their student.

Our Preschool hours for this year are Monday - Friday as follows:

AM Preschool 9:20 am - 12:40 pm

PM Preschool 12:45 pm – 4:05 pm

If you are interested in expressing interest in Chesterbrook’s Community Peers Program, please complete this google form.

Please reach out to CES Assistant Principal, Lara Macdonald ([email protected]) with any questions.

Principal's Message

FSES Community,

I hope this week's newsletter finds you all well. As we head into another 5 day week, I wanted to take a moment to highlight something truly exciting coming up: our PTA's fantastic fundraiser, the Harlem Wizards vs. our very own staff and a team comprised of faculty from neighboring schools!

I am absolutely buzzing with anticipation for this event! The energy, the laughter, and the sheer fun of the Harlem Wizards' show is something everyone, regardless of age, can enjoy. And to see our dedicated teachers and staff take to the court? That's going to be a memory-maker!

Now, let's be honest, basketball isn't exactly my strongest suit. But that's precisely why I'm so thrilled! I'm ready to step onto the court and embrace the spirit of the game, knowing I'll be cheered on by the most supportive community imaginable. Your encouragement will be my superpower!

This fundraiser is a wonderful opportunity to come together, have a blast, and support our school's vital programs. The PTA has worked tirelessly to bring this incredible event to us, and I know it will be a resounding success.

Please mark your calendars and join us for an evening of unforgettable entertainment. Let's pack the stands, show our school spirit, and create some lasting memories.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership.

Eating Disorder Parent Information

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023), Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives. There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources for parents and guardians of Fairfax County Public Schools. This information may be found at Eating Disorders

Principal's Message

FSES Community,

Thank you for the fantastic turnout at last week's PTA meeting! It was a great audience and we were honored to have School Board Member, Robyn Lady, join us and speak to our community. Several FSES staff members also presented some celebrations of our midyear data compared to the division. The slide deck can be accessed below. It is evident that there is a lot of hard work happening here and we are so proud of our Panda's successes. These PTA meetings are vital for our school-community partnership.

Thank you for your prompt responses to my email regarding today's early release. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated! We have three more three hour early releases (3/17, 4/28, and 5/19). We will hold our rising Kindergarten orientation on 4/28. Please reach out to neighbors if they need to register their child for Franklin Sherman next year.

I'm eagerly anticipating playing in the Wizards PTA game on March 7th and hope to see many FSES students there!

Principal's Message

FSES Community,

I hope this newsletter finds you well.

A quick reminder that our PTA meeting is tomorrow night at 5:30 PM in the school cafeteria. There is also a Zoom link below if you cannot join us in person. We encourage all families to attend. Several of our fantastic FS staff members will be presenting an overview of our academic achievements at the mid-year point. This is a great opportunity to hear about the progress our students are making and to ask any questions you may have. We look forward to seeing you there!

Please make sure to mark on your calendars that 2/24 is our three hour early release. We have not had an early release since December so you should have received an email from me today confirming your plans.

Fingers crossed for a full week with no snow as it looks like the weather pattern has shifted! We're all looking forward to uninterrupted learning time and hopefully some warmer weather.

Principal's Message

FSES Community,

What a fantastic World Culture Fest! It was truly heartwarming to see so many families connecting and enjoying the diverse foods and traditions represented in our community. The sights, sounds, and flavors from around the globe made for a memorable evening. A huge thank you to our amazing PTA for their tireless efforts in organizing this event, and especially to Ben Moore for his expertise in bringing it all together. The success of the festival is a testament to the strength and vibrancy of our community.

Please make sure to mark on your calendars that 2/24 is our three hour early release. We have not had an early release since December so you will receive an email from me confirming your plans.

Like you, I'm keeping a close eye on the weather! Fingers crossed for sunshine as we look forward to a fun-filled week of spirit days, with our our 100th Day celebration!

In your child’s take home folder this week, you will see a handout from the school showcasing our year long School Improvement and Innovation Plan. Outlined are our reading, math, and 21st century skills this year. On the back side, we noted our celebrations so far for the 24-25 school year. These items would not be possible without the support of such a strong community.

I truly appreciate your open levels of communication as I have asked to gather information on a survey regarding my leadership as I come up on being your principal for a year. I am grateful for this opportunity and look forward to continuing the excellence of Franklin Sherman.

I wish you a restful, joyous holiday season and look forward to seeing you in the new year.

Attendance Is Important Every Day!

Important Reminder: Keep up the great attendance

School is in session until Friday, December 20th & starts back PROMPTLY on Monday, January 6th!!

Set positive habits for the new year. Remember: positive attendance = higher academic achievement + better sense of belonging (more than 10% of the school year missed = chronic absenteeism)

This is a big time of the year for both travel and for sicknesses. Please plan travel accordingly, and refer to the Health Flyer for parents “Can My Child Go To School?” when sick.

If your child is not feeling well, please refer to FCPS guidance on when to keep your child home.

Principal's Message

FSES Community,

I hope everyone had a restful break. We had a jam packed two days before we all left for Thanksgiving. We had students working on “Balloons Over Broadway” which is a creative and critical thinking activity inspired by the book Balloons Over Broadway by Melissa Sweet. This book tells the story of Tony Sarg, the puppeteer who created the iconic balloons for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Students were tasked with brainstorming ideas for their own unique parade balloon. This project blends literature, art, and engineering, making it a favorite for encouraging cross-curricular learning and hands-on creativity.

We also celebrated our students of the month "Paws-a-tive Panda" communicator awards for students in each grade level. The students are announced on the morning news and then Mr. Ralston and I deliver certificates.

Staff, students, and the community participated in our first annual Turkey Trot before the break and it was a huge success. Whether students ran or walked with friends, it was an exciting day for all.

We look forward to the quick weeks in December to have a PTA meeting December 11th from 8-9. Please do join us on the Zoom link if you are unable to come in person. On December 9th, we will have a three hour early release.

Thank you for your continued support. Stay warm!

AAP Full-Time Questions & Support: Virtual Office Hours

Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for Full-Time advanced academic programs may submit the AAP Full-Time Referral Form to Christy Stoermann ([email protected]) no later than December 15, 2024

The window for families to submit a referral for Full-Time AAP services is the first day of school through December 15, annually.  Forms for Full-Time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for Full-Time AAP services will be accepted.

Submitting a referral form for Full-Time AAP will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of six trained professionals from various schools and roles will review the portfolio materials to determine eligibility for Full-Time placement.  Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they have been turned in for central selection on February 13th by emailing Christy Stoermann.

Referrals for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP are screened at the local school. If you miss this deadline, your student can still be screened for Subject-Specific AAP or Part-Time AAP for the remainder of the year and submit a referral for Full-Time AAP next fall.

For more information, please visit the Advanced Academic Programs website.

Ms. Stoermann, our Advanced Academic Resource teacher, will host a virtual office hour session on Friday, December 13 from 8:00-8:45 a.m. (Zoom Meeting Link) Bring your questions regarding AAP Full Time screening (available to students in Grades 2-6) or any other AAP questions you have.
