Principal's Message

Dear Franklin Sherman Families,

I hope you all have had a wonderful, relaxing summer. I am extremely excited for our new school year and seeing your student(s) on Monday. It will be back to routines for us all as we go to bed earlier and make sure to have a good breakfast in the morning.

Thank you to our amazing PTA for stocking the lounge with so many great treats this week and for the delicious lunch yesterday. The sign out front was a great added touch of excitement as we welcomed families to our open house yesterday.

Thank you to those of you who attended our open house. The staff have been busy receiving professional development this week as well as getting their rooms and the hallways ready for you to see. We do have another opportunity coming up for parents to come and meet their student's teacher. Please join us for Back to School Night on August 28th. K-3 is from 5:30-6 and grades 4-6 is from  6-6:30. A friendly reminder that this is a kid free event and a great opportunity for parents to meet their student(s)' teacher and learn about the curriculum for the year.

If you have any questions/concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I hope you and your family have a great last weekend of the summer.

Dismissal Map

In an effort to make our dismissal routines safer and more efficient we have created a new dismissal plan for this school year.  Walkers will be dismissed out door #6 towards the playground and neighborhood behind the playground. Kiss n Ride students will exit from door #4, next to the outdoor classroom and learning garden, and stage next to the solar panel so they can look for their car with their teacher.  Bus riders will continue to exit from the main entrance by the office.

We are confident that our silent dismissal procedures will maximize learning time and create a safer and smoother transition home for all our students!

Student Accident Insurance Program

Fairfax County Public Schools does not provide medical insurance for accidents that occur at school. Parents may want to consider if purchasing voluntary student insurance is right for their family.

K & K Insurance Group has student accident insurance coverage available for purchase by parents. If you do not have other insurance, this plan may be a resource to consider. Additionally, even if you have other coverage, this plan can help fill expensive gaps caused by deductibles and co-pays. Coverage may be purchased at any time during the school year.

Principal's Message

Dear Franklin Sherman Families,

As we begin an exciting new school year, it is my pleasure to introduce several outstanding new staff members who will be joining our team. Their diverse backgrounds and extensive experience will undoubtedly enrich our school community.

In the Primary Grades, we welcome Beth Auten, who joins us from McNair Elementary School. With over 20 years of experience teaching preschool through 4th grade, Beth brings a wealth of knowledge and dedication. Additionally, Katie Martin comes to us from Floris Elementary School. Since starting her teaching career in 2021, Katie has quickly made a positive impact on her students.

Our Special Education team is also welcoming new staff. Sophia Chavez, a recent graduate of Ohio University, has been involved in student teaching since 2022 and brings fresh perspectives and enthusiasm. Lynda Singletary, who has served as a long-term substitute in a preschool autism class at Pimmit Hills Center, brings valuable experience. Fay Choudry, with a teaching career spanning since 2006 from an International School in Dhaka to Willow Springs Elementary, adds her extensive expertise to our team.

We are excited to welcome Kim Denton from Timberlane, who has been teaching since 2014. Kim will serve as one of our STEAM teachers and also as an instructional coach, supporting our staff with her extensive knowledge and innovative approach.

Our new itinerant staff members include Erica Ruja, our new psychologist; Kai Smith, our new band teacher; Jane Chen and Rachel Blitch, who will be our new strings teachers; and Jordan Craig-Kuhn, our new technology specialist.

Please join me in warmly welcoming Beth, Katie, Sophia, Lynda, Fay, Kim, Erica, Kai, Jane, Rachel, and Jordan. We look forward to a successful year ahead, filled with growth and achievement.

At this point, all families should have received their student(s) teacher assignment for the 24-25 school year. If you have any quesitons or concerns, please email me. I look forward to a great school year!

Franklin Sherman Afterschool Form for Elementary Early Release Mondays

Franklin Sherman Weekly Newsletter3 months 1 week ago

Dear Parent/Caregiver,

The Early Release Mondays planned throughout the school year for elementary schools are essential to allow educators time for planning and professional development.  Students will be dismissed 3 hours early seven times throughout the school year and are encouraged to return home via their normal route.  However, we understand there may be a childcare hardship because of the early release Mondays for many of our families.  To resolve these concerns, student supervision will be available for families who need it.

The following dates are planned for Early Release Mondays throughout the school year:

  • September 23
  • October 28
  • November 25
  • February 24
  • March 17
  • April 28
  • May 19

To help plan for our school’s childcare needs during the early release Mondays, please complete this form by August 23rd https://forms.gle/pAAGTxiBq3QTWYsU9 for each of your children who are enrolled at Franklin Sherman Elementary. The form covers the first two early release Mondays, scheduled for September 23, 2024 and October 28, 2024. If you have multiple children, you will need to submit multiple forms. Staff will confirm the after school supervision plan for each student.

Thank you,
Farris Thomas
